Dovercourt Surgery is
situated in inner city Sheffield,
south
east of the centre. It
serves a population living
predominantly on the Wybourne,
Manor, Norfolk Park and Arbourthorne
Estates.
Our ethos is of a holistic,
patient-centred approach. Close
working and partnership with
patients and an integrated and
democratic Primary Health Care Team
enable us to provide a quality
service to our patients and
community.
The Practice has always embraced
change. We were Fundholders, lead
Practice in a national Total
Purchasing Pilot in 1997, a first
wave NHS Beacon Practice for Patient
and Public Involvement and we are a
PMS Practice and an active member of
the Central Sheffield Commissioning
Consortium. The Practice also led on
a successful bid for a Healthy
Living Network and went on to manage
it. We have always maintained strong
links with the community and other
organisations.
We serve 4,400 patients and the list
is growing. Having spent fourteen
years in our current building which
we have outgrown, we are due to
relocate to a new purpose built
facility which should be ready in
April 2008. This will incorporate a
pro-active and dynamic Pharmacy. The
new surgery is on a prime site with
brilliant views over the city and
the surrounding moors.
The PHCT Clinical Team consists of
the Senior Partner and 4 part-time
Salaried Partners, 2 Nurse
Practitioners, a Practice Nurse and
an attached team of integrated
Community Nurses. The Admin Team
consists of the Business
Manager/Executive Partner, a Deputy
Practice Manager, Reception Manager
and 6 part-time Receptionists. We
also work with a Midwife, Community
Physio, a Podiatrist, a Homeopath, a
Counsellor, 2 Mental Health Support
Workers, a Clinical Pharmacist and
an Advocacy/Benefits Advisor. When
we move to the new surgery we will
also have a Health Care Assistant as
part of the Nursing Team.
We already offer early morning
appointments and plan to further
extend opening hours by flexible
working. The main morning surgeries
are Drop-In and patients are triaged
to see either a Nurse Practitioner
or a GP. The rest of the day
consists of clinics by appointment.
All the doctors share the admin work
and we are virtually paperless on
Vision clinical system.
Future Plans
The Practice Business Manager is the
lead manager for Central Sheffield
Commissioning Consortium which
includes 23 Practices, and the
Practice is heavily involved in PBC.
We envisage that through this, we
will be able to influence patient
care in a more efficient and
innovative way, improving services
for our population through service
redesign that should benefit the
city as a whole.
We have always had an interest in
teaching but this had to be put on
hold over the past few years due to
severe shortage of space. When we
move to the new building we plan to
teach Medical Students and
Foundation Year doctors and move to
taking GP Registrars. In the past
the presence of students was always
welcomed and we look forward to
renewing this link.
Having a pro-active Pharmacy on site
will enable us to explore new ways
of joint working to improve patient
care and to engage them more in
their own
self-management. We are currently
exploring further possibilities
around cooperation on-site with
other agencies, for example, Sure
Start and the Police.
We look forward to working more
closely with colleagues from other
Practices through PBC, sharing
skills and experience and setting up
networks of peer-support. We believe
strongly in enabling staff to
develop their skills and interests
and support them to do so.
